The found-footage format is undercut by an artificial soundtrack that breaks the very immersion the format exists to create, and the narrative makes missteps serious enough to blunt the inherent dramatic weight of the subject matter. Creepy atmosphere and at least one strong performance surface occasionally, but they cannot repair a film whose core filmmaking choices work against themselves. Ti West made House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, which is precisely why this registers as a failure rather than a near-miss.
